Wayne Shorter's third masterpiece, recorded for Blue Note in 1964 with band members Freddie Hubbard, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Elvin Jones. Wayne's writing and playing is, as always, outstanding and state of the art. "Speak No Evil", "Witch Hunt" and "Infant Eyes" have become jazz standards. This magical session concludes with a previously unreleased alternate take of "Dance Cadaverous".
1964 was one of the most important years in Wayne Shorter's musical life. At the beginning of the year, the saxophonist was still a member of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers and appeared on classic Blue Note albums such as Free for All and Indestructible. Shorter made his own auspicious label debut this spring with "Night Dreamer" and quickly recorded the impressive follow-up "JuJu".
That summer, he joined the Miles Davis Quintet, solidifying a lineup that would become one of the seminal bands in jazz history. And when Shorter joined Freddie Hubbard, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Elvin Jones in the Van Gelder Studio on Christmas Eve 1964, they created a masterpiece with "Speak No Evil", a transcendent set of six Shorter originals, including the swinging title track "Witch Hunt" and the sublime ballad "Infant Eyes".
